Sri Lanka is through a low form especially in ODI. They lost to Afghanistan, Scotland and lately to Zimbabwe by 3-2. The five match ODI series was locked at 2-2 after the fourth match. Winning the final fixture of the match, Zimbabwe nicked its first series victory since 2009. The visitors won the match by 3 wickets with 71 balls remaining. Sri Lanka scored 203 runs, being sent to bat by Zimbabwe, to which, the latter replied with a successful chase in 38.1 overs.
Sri Lanka started its inning struck by Zimbabwe’s pace attack. The team lost its early wickets before 10 overs slogging to 31 for 3 in 8.2 overs. Danushka Gunathilaka hanged on to the wicket to knock an 86 ball 52. The batsman shared some scores with Angelo Mathews and Aselo Gunaratne. Although Gunathilaka was down after the 30th over, Gunaratne remained unbeaten with the strike of another half century in the inning. He scored 59 off 81 playing with the lower order, who hardly had any contribution.
By the last stretch, Dushmantha Chameera added 19 runs playing with Gunaratne. Zimbabwe bowler Sikander Raza nicked three wickets with an impressive economy of 2.10. Sri Lanka’s batsmen could not take a single boundary in his 10 overs. Graeme Cremer also pressed on the team taking two wickets while giving out only 23 runs.
Zimbabwe chased down the score without much difficulties. The easy win was made possible with the opening cameo that hauled the score to 137 for 1 in 23 overs. Openers Hamilton Masakadza and Solomon Mire played together for 14.2 overs bringing 92 runs. Gunaratne removed Mire in the 15th over bringing Tarisai Musakanda into the crease. The batsman partnered with Masakadza playing for more than 10 overs together. These three top batsmen forged the foundation of the win. Masakadza scored 73 off 86.
After half the inning, Zimbabwe lost several players as Akila Dhananjaya led the attack. The bowler knocked down six wickets for 36 runs in the inning. However, Sikander Raza knocked a run a ball 27 hauling the chase to the winning stretch.
