After being imposed a year long ban from all forms of international and domestic cricket, Steven Smith and David Warner are also banned from IPL 2018 season. The players were caught in the ball-tempering fuss that erupted recently in the third test against South Africa. The latest decision to ban them from IPL tournament came up after BCCI Committee of Administration consulted with top BCCI officials. BCCI President CK Khanna, IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla and Amitabh Chaudhary meet CoA regarding the issue. The concluding decision was to ban the players from tournament with immediate effect.
Steven Smith and Warner were earlier dropped from captainship of their respective IPL teams. Smith was the captain of Rajasthan Royals, while Sunrisers Hyderabad had David Warner was the captain. The players stepped down immediately after the day of the incident. Rajasthan Royals came up with Ajinkya Rahane as the new captain to replace Smith. Sunrisers are still to decide on their replacement to Warner. As the Aussie players were the kingpins in their respective teams, both Royals and Sunrisers are now struck with an impasse in their game plan.
The Australian players were the highest paid cricketers from their country in IPL tournament. Both were on contract of INR 12.5 Cr. each. Earlier, Washington Sundar, Sunrisers’ player, expressed that it would be difficult for the team to play without Warner. However, he assured that Sunrisers has enough players to replace the Aussie batsman. In its latest press release, BCCI stated its “hopes” on cricketers participating in IPL to hold the highest regard for the Spirit of Cricket and Code of Conduct as well as Match Officials.
The Aussie captain and vice-captain are now only allowed to play club level cricket as stated by Cricket Australia. Also, Warner is banned for life form captainship, while Smith is banned for 12 months from captainship.
