Vidarbha marks maiden Ranji title beating Delhi by 7 wickets

A straight win for Vidarbha! Before a couple of weeks, it won the maiden semi-final berth, and now, it nicked the maiden Ranji title. The players got better with each match throughout the tournament. In the final tussle against Delhi, the squad became such that they could dominate most of the sessions of the match. The hat-trick count of their bowler, the century knock, and hefty half centuries emerged as showdowns standing as attests of their prowess and form. Vidarbha won the final by 7 wickets.

Delhi scored 295 and 280 batting in their innings. While, Vidarbha knocked 547 as a reply to the former’s inning. The slump for Delhi came up in their second inning, when the team could not haul itself over to a dominant position. Vidarbha’s second inning was quite easy, scaling only 32 runs to win. The team played only 5 overs in the inning. The first inning score had a century off Akshay Wakhare knocking 133. It featured half-centuries off Faiz Faisal, the captain and opener, along with those from Wasim Jaffer, Aditya Sarwate and Siddhesh Neral.

Earlier in the match, Delhi batsman Dhruv Shorey beat a century knock of 145 runs, while Himmat Singh scored a half-century. In the match, Rajneesh Gurbani emerged as one of the match winners finishing with six wickets in the inning and two in the second. Vidarbha bowlers were more stringent and attacking in the second stretch. Delhi’s 280 all out was never without a challenge throughout the inning. Wakhare took down four wickets, Sarwate finished with three, while Gurbani took down those of Delhi captain Gautam Gambhir and Nitish Rana.

Vidarbha’s first inning had excellent partnership knocked with three of its players reaching the 70s score. This was apart from Wadkar’s century and Faizal’s half century. Wasim Jaffer’s 78 had the top order partnership, taking the chase to a strong figure. While in the middle order, Wadkar was aided by Sarwate, knocking 79 and Neral beating 74. These scores were crucial to lead the match with a challenging target for Delhi. In the second inning, the target to win was too marginal, following Delhi’s average score in their second inning.

Rajneesh Gurbani was awarded Player of the Match. Handling the Ranji Trophy, Vidarbha captain Faiz Faizal said he “cannot describe” the feeling. His team was in control the final match right from the beginning aided by bowlers. Coach Chandrakant Pandit is credited as much as the players for the debut win. He thanked the selection committee and “each and every person” he worked with.
