Sri Lanka selectors changed the ODI formation of the team considerably. The previous team is being reformed with new selections and change of roles. Thisara Perera is made the new captain of the ODI as well as the T20 side that would tussle India in the three-match series following the Test series. Perera has been the top all-rounder of the team taking the helm from Upul Tharanga.
Although Perera is not selected as a regular captain until now, the management might look for a fixed option at him. The player had an impressive form in the year with an aggregate of over 800 runs in the limited format. He played 22 ODI is the year achieving an excellent average of 47. He also hammered two centuries and five half centuries.
Tharanga was made the captain by Sanath Jayasuriya when Angelo Mathews step down in the middle of this year. His decision came out as a jolt as Perera was expected to handle the team. The player’s introvert nature was the reason cited by Jayasuriya as his dismissal. However, under Tharanga the team did not flare well. The team faced consecutive defeats in the format that include the white wash of 5-0 from India. Tharanga rested from the team last T20I schedule at Pakistan. Perera was handed the team in the match. Meanwhile, Tharanga also got suspended due to slow over rates.
Per reports, Sri Lanka selectors looked into several options for captainship. Angelo Mathews has injury issues that keeps him out of matches, while Dinesh Chandimal has a low form on ODI. This left only Perera as the worthiest option to lead the team. The player has a prolific ODI record. In 25 matches, he scored 1441 runs. His highest score is 80. The player has an impressive strike rate of 108.26 in the format.
