Sri Lanka is back to India for a Test series after nine long years and it is not a coincidence that the dates of the previous matches were exactly the same. In the last tour, in the first day, Sri Lanka slogged India at 32 for 4, this time, the match is being delayed due to uncertain weather. Also, India was not the top team in the format when Sri Lanka played in 2009. Now in 2017, the home team is on zenith.
These are the contrasting facets, simulating enough for the current series. It is despite the fact, the two teams met just a month before in a wholly unbalanced series. India won the matches one after another in Sri Lanka. Now, the latter has changed the squad to considerable marks, but only the play will determine if the facelift is adequate to challenge India at home. Sri Lanka played 17 Test matches in India so far without a single win.
India has not changed the squad to a massive extent, but the team would bring either R Ashwin or R Jadeja, who were rested in several previous series. On the other side, Sri Lanka came up with Angelo Mathews as a strong addition to the team. Another player, Dhanandaya de Silva is included. The team is bolstered with the Test series victory against Pakistan, in their latest tour to UAE and Pakistan. Mathews was not in that team, but his excellent record against India earned him the spot. Most of the players in the visitor’s team has not played a Test in India before. It is only Angelo Mathews and Rangana Herath, who has the experience.
The Sri Lanka coach earlier commented, his team need to focus on their own players rather than focusing on their Indian counterparts. Meanwhile, home skipper Virat Kohli is ready for the tournament. For him, “every match is important” when playing for the country. He said, the players just want to do well as a team.
