Sri Lanka test Skipper Dinesh Chandimal is struct with pneumonia. This will make the player unavailable for the first test against India. Sri Lanka cricket manager Asanka Gurusinha confirmed his ailing condition. The broad was informed the night before as it took some time for the blood report to arrive, as stated by Gurusinha. The player is now admitted to hospital. Per the team manager, skipper Chandimal is, “definitely out of the first Test’. In fact, it is the doctors, who advised the board to complete the first match without the player. The doctors are reported to say, they ‘can’t do anything’. The advice was, “finish the first Test”, after which they will inform further development on his health.
In absence of Chandimal, the team will be led by Rangana Herath. He was the captain of the Sri Lanka team early in the year. He led four test matches in 2016-17 season. Herath will captain the Sri Lanka Test team in the first test at Galle. The bowler has just scaled Number 2 position of ICC Test Bowler Ranking. He knocked 11 wickets in the test match against Zimbabwe lately. Without Chandimal, at the batting line-up the team will have to emphasize on bowling attacks to contain India in Galle.
Upul Tharanga is currently the ODI and T20 Caption of the team. However, Herath was chosen as the temporary captain for his prior experience of leading the team successfully in the format. However, as reported the selection of captain id not finalized yet. Although Upul Tharanga is under consideration, Herath has more chances.
Sri Lanka’s batting line-up will have Asela Gunaratne as a strongman. He was injured in the Zimbabwe match. Also, Nuwan Pradeep is on the team. The bowler was absent in the previous fixture due to hamstring injury. Chandimal’s absence can become an issue for Sri Lanka because he has intensive records against India.
