Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has come into the news once again after giving his opinion on World’s top five bowlers. Picking top five bowlers, Manjrekar chose bowlers from Australi, England and India. However, all of them were fast-bowlers and the list included no spinner.
During a recent interaction on ESPNcricinfo, Manjrekar sat with former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell and former Indian batsman Aakash Chopra and they picked their top 5 bowlers who are playing international cricket currently. While Chopra and Chappell included legendary Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, Manjrekar didn’t pick him, stating that he hasn’t picked many five-wicket hauls overseas.
Manjrekar picked up Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, James Anderson, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, thus including two Australians, two Indians and one English cricketer respectively. Post that, he explained why he didn’t pick any spinner.
“The reason why I don’t have a spinner is that they don’t play enough matches. When you are looking at the last two or three years, Ashwin has got all these wickets but he has missed nine overseas Tests,” Manjrekar noted during ESPN Cricinfo’s show Run Order.
The former Indian batsman further stated that he picked all the bowlers according to their overseas record and how they have fared in alien conditions, which haven’t suited them.
“The others have played enough home and away for us to make a reason and an assessment. Pat Cummins is right at the top because of his consistency, fitness. He has played right through without injuries. And of course, performances in all conditions,” Manjrekar concluded.
