As the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) got postponed owing to a bio-bubble breach, Indian cricket will resume with the inaugural World Test Championship Final, which will be played against New Zealand in Southampton from June 18. Following this, Team India will stay in England for the next 40 days to prepare for the coming five-match Test series.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced a 20-member squad, which will travel to England on June 2. Moreover, there are four standby players who will also travel with them. The squad contained two major surprises as Bhuvaneshwar Kumar was not selected to play in those conditions which favor him the most and Kuldeep Yadav, who was once hailed by Ravi Shastri as ‘India’s first-choice spinner overseas’, was dropped from the squad.
‘India’s squad is really strong’
These two decisions generated mixed feelings from the fans and they started analyzing the squad. Along with the fans, cricket experts and former cricketers also expressed their say in the analysis. Former India wicket keeper batsman Parthiv Patel also decoded the squad and also lauded the selectors for picking a balanced squad.
Speaking on Star Sports, Patel said, “I think it looks a really strong squad. If you want to compare India and New Zealand squad, I think we have covered all the bases.”
“There’s a proper band of proper batsmen who can bat well in England. Everyone scored runs, and there is a spare batsman in KL Rahul. Imagine KL Rahul not finding a space in the Test squad, so how strong this squad could be,” the 36-year-old said.
“Then there is Axar Patel, who has probably been the man of the match in a lot of matches against England. He came in the case of Ravindra Jadeja and it felt like Jadeja will be out. Now Ravindra Jadeja and Ashwin will be back, so I think this squad looks really strong,” Parthiv Patel concluded.
