Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has told that the Indian management should play both the elite spinners – Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin in the playing XI for WTC Final. The all important final is just two days away now and both the teams have been preparing hard to beat each other. The world will witness the first Test champions when India will clash with New Zealand on June 18 in Southampton.
Gavaskar, who is currently in Southampton as he’s been selected as a commentator for the final, has revealed that the weather is quite warm and since the last few days in Southampton. As a result, he expects the wickets to become dry and assist spinners, thus making Ashwin and Jadeja a vital part of the selection.
“In Southampton, it’s been boiling hot over the last few days so the pitch will definitely be dry and help spin as the match progresses, so yes both Ashwin and Jadeja will play,” Gavaskar told PTI.
‘Ashwin and Jadeja also give the batting depth’
The legendary batsman wants both the spinners in the XI as they both can even bat well, providing India the much needed support from the lower order. “That (Ashwin and Jadeja playing together) also gives depth to the batting as well as give a fine balance to the bowling attack. For the series later much will depend on the weather and pitch conditions.”
Gavaskar also feels that Indian team has got the required practice after playing that intra-squad match and most of the players have been to England several times as well. “Today’s tours there are barely one or two practice games before the Test series begins and the Indian team has had intra-squad matches so they have had that practice,” he said.
“The team is a good blend of youth and experience and most of the players have been to England several times so they know the conditions and what to expect,” he concluded.
