With the tour to Sri Lanka almost confirmed, people have started predicting the Indian squad which will tour the island nation. Since the first-choice players will be in England preparing for the five-match Test series, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be sending a special white-ball specialist squad which will consist of players like Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Suryakumar Yadav, etc.
India is expected to play three ODIs, which will mark the beginning of the tour, and as many T20Is. On the other hand, the Test series between India and England will begin on August 4.
‘Shreyas Iyer or KL Rahul can lead India’
Former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha, meanwhile, has given some suggestions as to who should lead India in the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He suggested that either of KL Rahul or Shreyas Iyer should lead India, but both of them are down with injuries and are likely to miss the Sri Lanka tour. KL Rahul, on the other hand, has been named in the Test squad, which will travel to England soon. Rahul is currently recovering from acute appendicitis, while Iyer has recently undergone surgery on his shoulder.
In case both are unavailable, Ojha said that Shikhar Dhawan should lead India considering his vast experience in limited-overs. “When you talk about a new team, you need a guy who has experience. If Shreyas Iyer or KL Rahul is available then one of these two guys can be the Indian captain or if Shikhar Dhawan is there,” Ojha said while speaking to India Today.
“Out of these three guys you can have one because your captain has to be experienced to handle things. But if you ask me, I can think out-of-the-box at times when you can give a new team and try to build a new captain. Someone who is young and can be your next captain in the years to come, this (SL tour) is a great opportunity,” he said.
