Priyam Garg is an orthodox middle-order batsman who relies mostly on timing and technique. Priyam told to Times of India in an interview that his idol has always been MS Dhoni and that he has grown watching his idol's match winnings knocks over time.
Priyam, who led the India U-19 team in the last edition of the ICC U-19 World Cup, had not met Dhoni before he was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad at a brilliant price of Rs. 1.90 crore in the IPL 2020 Player Auction. India U-19 team was runner last season. Garg's most impressive knock came against came against Dhoni's CSK in last season. Priyam teamed with Abhishek Sharma and stabilized the Sunrisers' ship after the team was reduced to 69 for 4. Garg played brilliant knock as he remained unbeaten for 51 off just 26 balls. Sunrisers won the match by 7 runs and the lad was awarded the Man of the Match. His innings was sprangled with 6 fours and 1 six.
Priyam, after bagging his MoM trophy, rushed to meet Dhoni who was sitting in the dugout. "I asked him many things about captaincy and taking my game forward. He just said – 'be fit. that's all. Your fitness will decide your career and how long you will play'. He asked me to focus on my fitness and game plan. He said to take care of my body and said a game plan is a must. 'Sit and plan your game and be fit'. These two things will take you forward. I told him about the videos I have. He laughed and hugged me. It was an emotional moment for me. I asked him about captaincy skills and he explained all that to me. I will never forget those tips from him," the 20 year old further recalled.
Garg also shared his experience of meeting Virat Kohli. "Meeting Virat bhaiya was really amazing. He also told me about the importance of being fit. He said – 'you can play for a long time if you are fit'. He asked me to focus on my fitness and spend as much time in the nets as possible," Priyam further told TimesofIndia.
