Pakistan captain Babar Azam, who is widely hailed as one of the most elegant cricketers of the modern era, has picked his favorite players of cover drive in cricket. Babar himself is a beautiful driver of the ball and his stats and records over the years are a proof of what he has achieved. Earlier, there was a ‘Fab Four’ comprising of Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root and Kane Williamson, but now fans and experts talk about ‘Fab Five’ including Babar Azam.
When it comes to cover drive, only a few players have mastered the shot elegantly and Babar is one of the few. However, the batter is in love with the cover drives of two other players.
During a chat with Cricwick, Azam revealed his favorite players of cover drives and also spoke about the difference between the two types of cover drives played by those two favorite.
I like Ian Bell, Kane Williamson’s cover drive: Babar Azam
“I really like Ian Bell’s cover drive, it was very smooth and it looked like someone was playing it in slow motion. Kane Williamson plays the cover drive really well because he plays it really late and plays it very close to his body,” Azam said.
“My cover drive is natural but I have honed it. I have struggled on my cover drive as well and some people used to say don’t play it too early into the innings but I worked on it and I try to hold myself back (from playing cover drive) early in the innings but that’s not the case in T20 where there is not much time and you have to play with the flow. In One-Day and Test cricket, I play my shots after taking some time,” he added.
