The Dhaka Premier League is gradually rising as a global T20 League since its inception in 2013-14. In the year the tournament was induced into the List A Status bringing in a good number of international players in the nation. There were 82 players in DPL from other nations. In the season, Bangladesh Cricket Board allowed two players from other nations in a team. In its next season in 2014-15, BCB capped the number of overseas players in a team to only one.
Although, there are many players from nations like Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, England and Afghanistan in DPL, the most impactful are from India. In 2016, most of the players in the league were from India and Sri Lanka. 36 players from overseas countries participated in the league, of which, 22 were from India and 10 from Sri Lanka. The reason for this, as stated by BCL, is that the best available players in the league were from the two countries.
Some of the prominent players from India in the League were Uday Kaul, Jalaj Saxena, Pawan Negi, Ishank Jaggi, Manoj Tiwary, Yusuf Pathan, Dinesh Karthik, Rajat Bhatia and Jatin Saxena. For Jatin Saxena, it was a challenge as the matches were competitive and he was in pressure. He said that local players were much eager to welcome and they were inquisitive about the club culture in India, domestic formats, and leagues. The interactions were all healthy except for the difference in language.
Another player, Manoj Tiwary was interested in the league through Shakib Al Hasan. Both are good friends since his stint with Kolkata Knight Riders. Tiwary was with Team Abahani in the league and played with Tamim Iqbal, Taskin Ahmed, and Liton Das. He perceived that Bangladesh players have improved in the shorter format of the game and the tournament was competitive. In the same team was Uday Kaul. He was the first player from India to sign up for DPL.
The present surge of Indian players in DPL is because BCCI has allowed Indian players to play in Overseas List A tournaments. There were a handful of regular players from India in DPL, but in the recent series, the number went up drastically. For Indian players, the league can be a profitable venture in terms of cricketing experience as well as money.
