Australia captain Steve Smith faced another blow as his involvement in the latest ball tempering incident surfaced awkwardly. IPL franchisee Rajasthan Royals confirmed that Smith stepped down as the captain of team the upcoming season of IPL 2018. To replace the Aussie captain, Royals selected Ajinkya Rahane to lead the team. In the previous season, they were playing for Rising Pune Supergiant, which was created to replace Rajasthan Royals. In the latest auction, Smith was retained by the T20 League franchisee. On the other hand, Ajinkya Rahane was put on board for INR 4 Cr. following right-to-match option.
Steve Smith is one of the top players in current international cricket scenario. The Aussie captain is also considered as one of the most talented and gentle cricketers. However, he admitted about his consent on a pre-planed ball tempering incident that surface in the ongoing Test match against South Africa. Although not involved directly, he was fully aware of misconduct by Cameron Bancroft. Australian Cricket fraternity is sternly criticizing the player and Cricket Australia is ready to take strong action against him. The lash back might escalate to both Smith and David Warner being banned for life.
IPL team Rajasthan Royals head Zubin Bharucha said Cape Town incident has certainly disturbed the Cricket world. He disclosed, the franchisee is being with close touch with BCCI and is being counselled by the board. Per Bharucha Ajinkya Rahane has been a “Royals family” for long and he understand the culture and value of the team, adding there is “absolutely no doubt that he will be a great leader” of the team.
A strong sentiment of dislike is growing in Australia against Smith and the cricketers involved in the ball tempering incident. Apparently, it seemed to be the last thing expected off a reputed person like Steven Smith. There are also several news citing a loss of trust in Australian team by their fans. The way the case unfolded was dramatic. Cameron Bancroft was seen hiding a tape inside his trousers. While being asked by umpires, he shows them a black hankie.
