Sri Lanka will play the T20 series with Australia without its captain. Skipper Angelo Mathews injured his hamstring and is dropped from the squad. He is currently on medical treatment as confirmed by Sri Lanka Cricket. The selectors will decide on a stand-in captain who will lead the team on Mathew's absence. The new temporary captain will be announced shortly before the tournament.
The skipper has been playing alongside his team despite an injury in the second T20 against South Africa. He was the key player to win the match, but was injured. He could not play in the last match of the series and was replaced by Dinesh Chandimal as the stand-in captain. Meanwhile, in the ODI series, he was replaced by Upul Tharanga as the interim captain of the team.
For the upcoming T20 campaign against Australia, it would be an arduous task for the selectors to find a replacement for Mathews. Dinesh Chandimal and Tharanga both are not in their best forms to play the shortest format of the game. The tract record of both the players are weak. In the last series with South Africa, Chandimal scored 6, 22 and 5 runs in three matches respectively. Tharanga played only the third T20 and scored 20 off 11 balls.
A statement from Sri Lanka cricket stated the captain will be selected for all the three formats of the game. They are most likely to meet on 7th of the month. The practice match with Australia is on February 15. The T20 series will start from 17th.
