Team India had a massive change in the recent formation of its squad for the ODI series with New Zealand. The selectors brought back the experienced batsmen of the team, while they rested the senior bowlers. The top bowlers in the Test like Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami are rested for the first three ODIs. In the recently concluded Test Series, a number of XI young players were included from the XI squad. They had a good opportunity to play against a top International Team, which was utilized to the fullest extent.
The ODI series is scheduled to start from October 16. In the last ODI series with Zimbabwe, the selectors took a similar approach to induce new players into the squad. Young cricketers from the domestic and Under 19 circuit like Manish Pandey, Axar Patel, Jayant Yadav, Dhawan Kulkarni, Kedar Yadav and Mandeep Singh are now included for the upcoming ODI series. Also, Jasprit Bumrah is brought back to the squad. For Mandeep Singh, Jayant Yadav and Axar Patel the series would be their international debut.
The new players in the team have considerable exposure to international level cricket as they are from the XI team. For instance, Mandeep Singh was in the India A team touring Australia for a six-match series. The team playing with Australia A in the Quadrangular A-team series. Singh scored 198 runs, knocking two successive fifties. In the final match, the player delivered a match-winning knock of 95. Offspinner Jayant Yadav played two tour test matches. He had an excellent performance, taking down 7 wickets. Another player, Hardik Pandya has been a top bowler in T20s. The upcoming match would be his ODI debut.
The selectors picked up Suresh Raina to offer him an opportunity. According to the new Chairman of the selector's panel, MSK Prasad, Raina will also add up as a part time spin option. Another reason is the unavailability of Shikhar Dhawan and Lokesh Rahul. Raina played his last ODI in 2015. The player is currently not in his best form, which is evident from his stance in T20s. In the Asia Cup, he had 39 runs playing three innings and in the World T20, he managed 41 runs in four innings. Raina has scored only one ODI century playing 26 innings so far.
The team was selected at the Annual General Meeting of BCCI held on September 21. As the bowling attack is now formed with seamers Umesh Yadav, Kulkarni, Bumrah and Pandya. Amit Mishra, Jayant Yadav and Axar Patel comprise the spin attack. Players for first three ODIs are MS Dhoni as Captain, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Manish Pandey, Suresh Raina, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Jayant Yadav, Amit Mishra, Jasprit Bumrah, Dhawal Kulkarni, Umesh Yadav, Mandeep Singh and Kedar Jadhav.
