Following the complaint by a media journalist, the conflict of interest row surrounded Ganguly's business stake with multiple authorities. The former India skipper is presently a member of the IPL Governing Council as well as the president of Cricket Association of Bengal. The concern raised by the Journalist was on his commercial tie up RP Sanjiv Goenka Group. The business house was the franchisee owner of Atletico de Kolkata (ATL), the Indian Super League Football Club. What troubled Ganguly was not his stake, but it was the recent maneuver of the business house of being an IPL Franchisee of Rising Pune Super Giants. As an authoritative dignitary of associations, the former cricket cannot hold a stake in any IPL Franchise.
Ganguly had about 5% stake in the ISL Franchisee. The equation starts with his 6.76% share in company named Catch 22 Informatics LLP. This company has 75% share in Kolkata Games and Sports Pvt. Ltd., which is associated with the ATL. The former player has made it clear that he is neither a shareholder of the team New Rising Promoters Pvt. Ltd., nor of any entities who are its shareholders. He strongly stressed that he also has no knowledge of the "shareholding pattern" of the company.
The case of conflict, as cited by the journo followed the fact that Ganguly was unable to disclose his commercial tie up with Atlelico de Kolkata. Furthermore, BCCI cleared up that it was not aware of his involvement with the ISL franchise. President Manohar has also clarified that the former cricketer has no conflict of interest, as he is not involved with any IPL team. However, the ombudsman has expressed some concerns over the fact that BCCI was ignorant of his involvement with the ISL franchise as well. On the other hand, the journalist who instigated the row wrote that it was actually Ganguly, who failed to report his relations with the IPL promoters to BCCI.
Cricketer like Ganguly is successful to maintain a respectable image throughout the cricket fraternity and to sports fans. An allegation involving the already stained IPL has stunned the player. He has termed the charge as a 'purported complaint' citing his standard of ethics towards the sport. It should be highlighted that recently, present skipper MS Dhoni was also accused of match-fixing that culminated as a million dollar defamation claim against the regional language newspaper.
