Ravi Shastri denied that CAC’s coach selection is a ‘fiasco’. However, the appointed head coach retained his core team, which was in his early tenure, without the slightest hint from the CAC. Also, Shastri did not negate the validity of the committee’s decision. He allowed Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan to stay in his team as batting and bowling consultants. Meanwhile, Bharat Arun is named as the bowling coach and Sanjay Bangar is named as the Assistant Coach. Additionally, former fielding coach R Sridhar is also appointed on his previous designation. This completed Shastri’s ‘core team’.
The head coach said he spoke to both Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid personally and they will be the consultants of the team. He cleared the air stating, “there are no issues on that.” He said, while the decision on the coaching team was taken he was in England. He said, the appointments of Dravid and Khan by the CAC was informed to him and he had no issues on that. The coach, however, also wanted his core team to accompany. This has made the coaching team of India a bit bulky. Three coaches in Batting, bowling, and fielding, two consultants and a head coach.
The recent appointments were made after the CoA arranged a special meeting with the coach forming a separate committee. Kumble proposed to bring his earlier team on board and it was granted. Kumble thanked the CAC for choosing him as the head coach of Team India as it is a privilege. Amitabh Chaudhary, termed CAC’s effort as ‘fantastic’ acknowledging their job since one and half months.
The position of physio and trainer are retained by Patrick Farhart and Shankar Basu. The team of coaches are in contract for two years until the end of World Cup 2019. BCCI also rolled out an advertisement for the team’s full-time manager.
