Sri Lanka Cricket, lately, announced that Rangana Herath will lead the Sri Lanka test team in the campaign against Bangladesh for the two home test series. The tournament sit set to begin in the first week of March. It is a two-week long game where Bangladesh will be visiting Sri Lanka. The announcement was made on Monday, February 28. The player will lead as the stand-in captain on behalf of Angelo Mathews. The latter missed the tournament due to a hamstring injury. Another player who is newly introduced to the team is Malinda Pushpakumara. The player has been prolific in domestic circuit bowling as a left-arm spinner.
In a statement, SLC said that Herath will stand-in for Angelo Matthews and the full list of players will be revealed soon. The board is most likely to announce the full squad on the next day. The release confirmed that Herath has “taken on the challenge of leading the team through the two test.” The statement also confirmed the inclusion of Malinda Pushpakumara, the slow left-arm spinner. It stated that the player represented Sri Lanka A team in 2012 in campaigns against South Africa and Zimbabwe. It was a triangular tournament. Next in 2015, he played with the same team against Pakistan.
Earlier in the week, the bowler had an intensive inning playing against England Lions. He finished at 13 for 205. The strike earned him the maiden inclusion in the national team. He tallied 558 first class wicket at an average of 19.85. Playing alongside the A team, he picked 29 first class wickets at an average of 26.17. Herath, on the other hand, led the team in the campaign against Zimbabwe in last November. They won the series by 2-0. Earlier in August, the team also topple Australia in a three-match series for 3-0.
In their previous faceoff, Sri Lanka won the series from Bangladesh in 2014. They nicked the first by 248 runs and the second was a draw. The upcoming match is set to begin on March 7 in Galle. The second match is from March 15 and will be played in Colombo.
