Otis Gibson is the top candidate to run for the post of Head Coach of South Africa. Cricket South Africa is looking out for Head Coach and candidates from other nations were being invited to apply for the post. Lately, as confirmed by South Africa Skipper captain Faf du Plessis, Gibson is the most preferred candidate for the designation. As reported, the skipper was discussing the credentials of the prospective coach. He was recommended by the 5-men panel that was entrusted with the responsibility to select the coach by CSA. The recommendation was put forward by the panel on August 4. The comment from the captain is the first official statement on selection of SA coach.
However, the appointment is not finalized until now. The recommendation will have to be approved by the South Africa board. Gibson’s appointment as the SA coach would mean England losing its bowling coach and it might call for a compensation. The England Cricket board might ask the compensation from CSA. The discussions are ongoing between ECB and CSA. Still, the possibility of Gibson being the next coach of South Africa is strong.
Faf du Plessis is upbeat on working with the new head coach. The captain is presently reported to consult with players who worked with Gibson at the past, as he has no experience of working with the coach before. Plessis said, he spoke with players from both West Indies and England who has experience of working with Gibson. He added, per Ben Stokes, he is “a really good coach”, but the top England allrounder is not sure how “he will be like as a head coach.”
Recently, South Africa was struck with a low form in both bowling and batting and across all formats. The top ODI Team had to return home from Champions Trophy before entering the semi-final stage. In the following Test series, England defeated it by 3-1.
