Between the WTC Final against New Zealand and the Test series against England, India is set to tour Sri Lanka for a limited-overs series, which is most likely to happen in July. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the tour and the treasurer Arun Dhumal revealed the reason why it is important for India to tour Sri Lanka amidst the pandemic.
While speaking to Sportskeeda, Dhumal reckoned that the BCCI made the call as the Sri Lanka tour was a part of India’s Future Tour Programme (FTP) and thus it was necessary to conduct all the postponed series to solve the financial crisis.
BCCI Treasurer reveals the reason behind Sri Lanka tour
“See as you know the cricket world is under tremendous pressure for the last one-and-a-half year given this COVID pandemic, a lot of FTP has been cancelled which has put a lot of strains on these associations all over the world. Until and unless you do these tours, we can’t make up, and it would be very difficult for all these boards to come out of the financial struggle that they are going through,” said Arun Dhumal while speaking to Sportskeeda.
Furthermore, he also hailed India’s bench strength, which allowed the BCCI to conduct two series simultaneously. “We had to miss the Sri Lanka tour last year also. So, we need to work out on that and since our team that is going to England is primarily for Tests, we could have made up a team for these white-ball matches. So, that is why we thought we should do our bit to make sure Sri Lankan board and we can play white-ball cricket in time,” added Arun Dhumal.
Team India to go 14 days quarantine before departing for England
According to reports, the Indian Cricket Team is all set to undergo 14-days quarantine in a Hotel in Mumbai from May 19. The BCCI has arranged for chartered flights for all the players and support staff, which will pick them from the respective cities. Players will then isolate themselves before boarding the flight to London. After landing in England, players will travel to Southampton where they will be able to train during the quarantine.
