The latest ICC ranking had a rare accolade for Virat Kohli, the India captain. It came after his brilliant knock in the recently concluded ODI series against South Africa. Kohli is now at the top of ICC ODI ranking for batsmen. But, the major achievement which the skipper had was crossing the 900-point mark in both ODI and Test format. Reaching the milestone, now, Kohli is the only batsman after AB de Villiers to reach the points in both formats at the same time. The latest update of ranking was rolled by ICC on February 20.
The South Africa series offered the major impetus to Kohli’s points. In the ODI series he knocked two centuries in his aggregate of 558 runs. With 909 as his rating point, he surpassed Sachin Tendulkar as well as Brain Lara. Kohli is now at the seventh position in the list of all-time highest ODI point holders. Tendulkar’s best point was 887, which Kohli crossed earlier in the series. Ahead of the South Africa series, the player was with 876 rating points. At the rate which Kohli is accumulating his points, the player will soon scale up to the top of the chart. Viv Richards, who has the highest rating point is close by less than 30 points. Whereas, at number 6, Javed Mindad is only a single point ahead of Kohli.
In bowling, Jasprit Bumrah and Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan became the top rankers in the chart. Bumrah’s attack against South Africa in the recent series made him to jump two spots to reach the top. In the series, he took eight wickets. On the other hand, Rashid had an accent of eight spots after his 16-wicket haul in the ODI series against Zimbabwe. Before the SA campaign, Bumrah had 728 points, while Khan had an aggregate of 649. In the latest chart, both of the bowlers are with 787 points. Rashid Khan had the rare achievement of becoming the youngest bowler to reach the zenith at the age of 19.
Bumrah's eight wickets in the series helped him move up two spots but the biggest gainer was Afghanistan's Rashid, who climbed to the top spot after jumping eight positions following a rich haul of 16 wickets in the five-match ODI series against Zimbabwe. Bumrah and Rashid, who had 728 and 649 rating points before their respective series, now have 787 points, with the latter becoming the youngest to top the bowler rankings at the age of 19.
