On the second T20 of Asia Cup 2016, Sri Lanka defeated UAE by 14 runs. Although the match was low scoring, the chase was paralyzed by bowling spells from Lasith Malinga. The match could have a reversed result continuing the winning streak of UAE as in the first inning Sri Lanka was strangled to 129. However, Malinga playing his the match after a brief recess, shattered UAE’s batting line knocking down 4 wickets. It bagged him the Player of the Match award.
UAE’s game plan in the first inning of choosing to field was successful enough. The inning turned in favor of the team restricting Sri Lanka’s score within 130, the limit predefined by Skipper Amjad Javed. The captain himself knocked down the first three Sri Lankan wickets.
Sri Lanka had a strong grip on the match at the start, hauling the score to 72 for 1 in the first 10 overs. Chandimal, who took 50 runs of 39 balls presented a decent T20 streak as an opener batsmen. His partnership with Dilshan that added 68 runs was crucial for the victory. The fall of wickets was consistent from the twelfth over after Siriwardana was knocked at 79. Remaining batsmen followed adding no substantial runs. In rest of the overs the team could add only around 50 runs. The primary wickets went down trying to hit big, all caught and bowled. UAE was not as easy as perceived by Sri Lanka as the first half of the match witnessed a tough fight.
In the next inning, Sri Lanka gained control from the beginning. In the maiden over, UAE lost 2 wickets to Malinga’s ‘over 100 kmph slow’ pacers. Rohan Mustafa was leg-before in the first ball while in the last ball of the over, Mohammad Shahzad was bowled for a single run. The team was 7 for 2 in the first over. The number further slided to 16 for 4 in the fourth over. Removing Muhammad Kaleem and Usman, Sri Lanka forayed to the winning stance.
Reduced to 47 to 6, the only player form the Emirates to add some runs was S Patil, the sixth batsmen down the line. The mid order batsman smashed 3 boundaries and 2 sixes taking 37 off 34 balls. Hauling the chase to 85 runs in the seventeenth over, he yielded to Malinga’s spell as he tried to hit his slow 117.7 kmph delivery. The team pulled the chased only to 99 runs as overs exhausted. It was only the 16 extras in the inning that made the number 115.
