Arshadeep Singh bowled an outstanding last over as Sanju Samson's magnificent century went in vain after he failed to take Rajasthan Royals over the line. Punjab Kings clinched the last-ball thriller by 4 runs.
Earlier, Rajasthan Royals won the toss and elected to bowl first on this batting track at Wankhede. There were many debutants for teams today, with Shahrukh Khan, Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith playing their first match for Punjab Kings and Mustafizur Rahman and Shivam Dube playing for Rajasthan Royals.
While Rajasthan Royals played Manan Vohra as the opener, pushing Buttler in the middle order, Punjab Kings chose to stick with Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul as openers and Gayle at three.
The Royals started well, with the newest recruit Chetan Sakariya extracting some seam and swing early on. Soon, they met with a bizarre DRS call, where they chose not to review, when replays showed three reds on ball-tracking. However, that decision didn’t affect much as Sakariya removed Mayank Agarwal in his next over.
Chris Gayle walked in at three to bat and looked solid, hitting two lovely boundaries early on. The Royals’ worries in the field continued as Ben Stokes put down an absolute sitter, according to his standards. He did all the hard work to get near the ball at the deep mid-wicket boundary, but still found a way to put that down. KL Rahul got a life at Wankhede, where he has an impeccable record.
Just after that drop, Stokes walked in to bowl and was welcomed by Chris Gayle and KL Rahul, who made most of the over, smashing 12 runs. The Universe Boss was given a life by Rahul Tewatia, and making the most of that opportunity, Gayle followed it with a maximum over cow corner, taking Punjab Kings to 82/1 after 9 overs.
Samson brought Riyan Parag in the bowling attack and he made an impact straightaway, removing a well-set Chris Gayle, courtesy of a stunning catch at long-on by Ben Stokes. In walked Deepak Hooda and took no time to settle as he, along with skipper KL Rahul, fed on the RR bowlers and brought the team’s 150 in the 15th over. Hooda, especially, was on fire, smashing five sixes in two consecutive overs of Shivam Dube and Shreyas Gopal.
The duo then brought up a 100-run partnership between them in just 45 balls, before Morris sent Hooda packing for 64. Chetan Sakariya then grabbed a blinder to dismiss Nicholas Pooran for a golden duck. Punjab Kings finished on 221/6.
In reply, Mohammed Shami gave them a flying start as he got rid of Ben Stokes for a duck on the third ball. Arshdeep Singh then took a quick return catch from Manan Vohra and Jhye Richardson bowled Jos Buttler with a terrific yorker.
When Rajasthan Royals were looking in deep trouble, skipper Sanju Samson was ready for the rescue as he brought up his half-century. He, along with Shivam Dube began the rebuilding process and the skipper even got a couple of lifelines.
Shivam Dube was looking good after hitting three fours, but that wasn’t enough as he went for a lofted shot but holed out to Deepak Hooda at long-off boundary.
Skipper Sanju Samson continued his blitzkrieg and kept ticking the scoreboard with Riyan Parag, who hit two mesmerizing shots before getting out to a bouncer from Shami. Samson brought up his third IPL century and became the first player to score a century in his captaincy debut.
However, that wasn’t enough as he holed out to extra cover fielder on the last ball when five runs were required. Punjab Kings completed a 4 runs victory in the last-ball thriller

Smart move by Punjab to use old RCB uniform. It has made Gayle feel 4-5 years younger.
