Shikhar Dhawan top scored once again as Delhi Capitals moved to the top of the table with 12 points on the board. After a clinical bowling performance, Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw gave them a flying start and helped Delhi Capitals chase 167 with more than two overs to spare.
Earlier, Rishabh Pant won the toss and elected to bowl first. While the Delhi Capitals fielded an unchanged playing XI, Punjab Kings had to make two changes – Mayank replaced KL Rahul, both as a captain and as an opener as the latter was hospitalized before the match and Dawid Malan got a game ahead of Nicholas Pooran, who has been in poor form since the start.
Kagiso Rabada gave a flying start to Delhi Capitals as he dismissed Prabhsimran early on. Gayle, who walked in to bat at three, made his intentions clear and went after Rabada. However, Rabada came back with an unplayable full-toss and sent Gayle’s off-stump cartwheeling.
Following this, Punjab Kings’ scoring rate was reduced as Dawid Malan and Mayank Agarwal didn’t take any risks. Malan shifted his gears thereafter, hitting a six and a four against Ishant Sharma, but he perished, after failing to pick the straighter ball from Axar Patel. The match then witnessed a hilarious run-out as both Mayank and Deepak Hooda ran towards the same end and the latter was dismissed in the process.
Mayank then changed gears and notched up his half-century off 37 balls. Then, the Kings amassed 34 runs off the last two overs and put a defendable total of 166 on the board. Mayank Agarwal remained the top-scorer in the team, with an unbeaten 99 runs off just 58 balls. His knock included eight fours and four maximums.
Chasing 167, Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan got off to a sensational start as they smashed 37 runs in the first four overs, leaving a big question mark on Mayank’s face. Thus, he turned to the young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, but that move didn’t work well as Prithvi Shaw welcomed him with a six over cover and the duo took 9 runs off his over.
The, Mayank brought in Harpreet Brar, the hero from the last match against RCB and the move worked as he dismissed Prithvi Shaw with a beauty. However, that didn’t affect Dhawan as he continued smashing bowlers all round the park and brought up his 44th IPL fifty with a six in 35 balls.
Their skipper Rishabh Pant started hitting from ball one as he looked in a hurry to chase the target and make a positive impact on the net run-rate, but he got out in the process, miscuing one high in the air.
However, Hetmyer took the charge and finished the match with more than two overs to spare.
