For Bangladesh it is the second win in Asia Cup 2016. Although the team was struck with early wickets of Mohammad Mithun and Soumya Sarkar, Sabbir Rahman took hold of the inning attacking Sri Lanka with his 80 off 54 balls. The score of the team, 147, was a one sided contribution from Rahman, Al Hassan as well as Mahmudullah, who remained unbeaten in the inning. In the next inning, the host bowlers came out with overpowering spells containing the chase within 124, thus notching their second consecutive victory in the Asia Cup series.
Bangladesh batsmen could not keep up good partnership losing wickets consistently to the lower mid order batsmen. However, Sabbir was out of control running pass the fifteenth over hauling the score to 108. The batsmen came to the pitch in the first over after opener Mithun was leg bowled for a duck. He smashed 10 boundaries and 3 sixes scoring the high point from 54 deliveries. As he tried to continue his stance hitting the slower deliveries, in the over by Chameera, Jayasuriya had his stroke at the mid-wicket. Although, the batsmen was contained, his partnership with Al Hasan was the match winning stretch. The pair lasted for 11.1 overs adding 82 runs. Al Hassan`s 32 off 34 was a substantial addition. By the end of the inning, the damped impressions of the early overs were completely wiped off attaining a satisfactory score.
Sri Lanka apparently utilized its bowling attacked to the fullest. The 20 overs were bowled by seven different players leaving little options for Bangladesh. However, their failure to contain a couple of hard hitters did the damage. Matthews maintained a strict economy taking the opening wicket. Chameera gave out more runs but managed to contain three wickets, including that of Sabbir`s.
In the chase inning, the Team had a good start at the beginning. The top other batsmen maintained a good run rate, at the same time, keeping close to their wickets. The chase was at 72 for two wickets with Chandimal falling at 10.6 overs. Up till this, the rate at which the team acquired runs was adequate as they had no pressure of wickets. Chandimal had 37 runs off 37 balls partnering with Jayasuriya. The pair added 56 runs lasting more than 7 overs.
The match made way for Bangladesh by the middle of the inning. After Chandimal, the fall of wickets for Sri Lanka was timely, losing them in consecutive overs. Bangladesh bowling attack grew stronger following each wicket, giving out lesser runs. At the same time, the batting line was shattered. Hossain took the lead of the attack removing three mid order batsmen. Finally, as overs exhausted, Sri Lanka could pull the chase to 124 handing out the victory to the host. Sabbir was entitled the Player of the Match.
