Alex Blackwell, top Australia women cricketers announced her retirement from all format of the game ending her stint of more than 16 years. The 34 years old cricketer debuted for Australia back in 2003. She is the most-capped player of the team, who was also the vice-captain. Recently, Blackwell also become the fourth female Aussie cricketer to reach 5000 runs in international cricket. She was the captain of the team in their victorious campaign of 2010 T20 World Cup.
At the press meet she expressed that she is “most proud” of her stance as an evolving batter, especially in T20 cricket. She played a total of 251 international matches. James Sutherland stated her as an “wonderful” player to Australian Cricket and lauded her as a “tremendous leader”. Blackwell, however, will continue to play at league cricket in the shortest format. She has been a top player of Sydney Thunder in WBBL.
The women cricketer said her pursuit for “personal excellence and mastery of batting” still continues. She praised Cricket Australia for its diversity, inclusion and gender equity. She is one of the favorite women cricketers around the world, which is clearly apparent from accolades and wishes on her retirement from the fraternity. Blackwell is well known for her goodwill gestures in the sport.
India women cricketers are expressing their memories with women player. Harmanpreet Kaur, the India batter recalled Blackwell gifting her jersey in the World Cup 2017 Semi-final match as an appreciation of her unbeaten knock of 171. All-rounder Jhulan Goswami recollected the incident from 2010 T20 World Cup semifinals.
The India player remembered her words of consolation after Australia beat India. For Goswami, it was “quite a touching gesture”. She said her mood was not good after the defeat, but Blackwell cheered her up. India has been the favorite team for Blackwell in T20 format. In 41 ODIs and T20s matches against India, she scored 1045 runs. Per Goswami, her attitude was her biggest contribution to the game.
India women captain Mithali Raj described Blackwell as friendly, chatty and a social person. She said, the Aussie player was one of the girls who wants to be a part of cultural exchanges. Raj ruminated her memories of Blackwell when once the latter was roaming around the streets of Mumbai, discussing about and trying out new stuff. Raj said, Blackwell always appreciated her oppositions after the match.
