In their maiden match of World T20, England women was on strike against Bangladesh, which the former changed into a 36 run victory. For Bangladesh women team this would be the second defeat following that from India. England’s inning was powered up by Skipper Charlotte Edward’s 60 off 52 balls. The score was the primary drive for the team to pose the challenge of 153 against Bangladesh. She smashed seven boundaries for her team. Bangladesh could chase only till 117 for 6 wicket, which, however, is their highest score so far in any international T20 game.
England was on stride from the beginning of the inning. Tammy Beaumont was knocked at 18 off 14 balls, while the score stood at 34 in the fifth over. She was clean bowled by Jahanara Alam at the leg stump. Steered primarily by Edward, England’s score was at 70 for 2 in the tenth over when Taylor was returned to the pavilion. Heather Knight followed the batsmen shortly in the next over. In this point, there was a slug in the run rate, but it was recovered by rest of the team. Nat Sciver made 27 off 22 balls partnering with Edwards. This partnership brought 47 runs to the tally, where the later smashed a series of boundaries.
There were two catch misses from Bangladesh which saved Edwards at 53 and 57. For Sciver, it was once just before she was knocked. As England pulled the score to 153 for 7, there were contributions of 15 and 17 runs from Danielle Wyatt and Brunt respectively.
Bangladesh was stricken with four early wickets before they could accumulate 50. Sharmin Akhter was down in the first over following which there were hardly any big runs for the team. Although the next wicket was in the sixth over, the team amassed just 14 runs in the stretch. The fifth wicket partnership of Salma Khatun and Niger Sultana added 64 runs. Niger alone added 35 off 28 balls. The player hammered a six off Shrubsole’s delivery in the nineteenth over. Salma Khatun remained unbeaten throughout the inning playing 30 balls as she added 32. By the end of 20 overs, the pair dragged the chase to 117 substantiating the victory for England.
Against England, Jahanara had three wickets striking early and in the last two deliveries of the inning. In the next inning Shrubsole knocked to wickets and the other bowlers had one each.
