Cricket Australia (CA) have announced a mammoth 23-member squad for the upcoming limited-overs series against West Indies. The extended squad will travel to the Caribbean to play five T20Is and three ODIs in the month of July.
They have included the names of all eight players who missed the T20 tour of New Zealand in March – Steve Smith, David Warner, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Alex Carey and Mitchell Swepson. Initially, they were named in the uncertain Test tour of South Africa, which was called off due to COVID-19 concerns.
Two surprising omissions were of Marnus Labuschagne, who is currently in England for a County Championship stint and the other, of young Cameron Green, who is said to have opted for a season with Western Australia to improvise his bowling. The vast squad also consists of three leg-spinners in Zampa, Swepson and Tanveer and also has the options of one left-arm finger spinner in Ashton Agar.
Australia squad for Qantas Tour of the West Indies: Aaron Finch (c), Ashton Agar, Jason Behrendorff, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Riley Meredith, Josh Philippe, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson, Tanveer Sangh, D’Arcy Short, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Swepson, Andrew Tye, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa
While announcing the squad, national selector Trevor Hohns said that the focus was on the upcoming mega event – T20 Word Cup and they have picked the squad accordingly. “Mitch Swepson has been in exceptional form across all three forms of the game. His Big Bash performances with the Heat have been superb, as was his bowling for Queensland,” Hohns said.
“Tanveer Sanga was extremely impressive for the Sydney Thunder and we regard him very highly. While he didn’t play in New Zealand it was a great opportunity for a young bowler to be around the group.
“Along with the class of Adam and Ashton we are very fortunate to have four highly capable spinners on this list,” he added.
