New Zealand started preparation for the upcoming fixtures with Bangladesh. Two top players, Tom Bruce, and Ben Wheeler, are being selected for the upcoming T20 series against the home team. Another player, Corey Anderson is picked up as a batsman. Fast bowler, Trent Boult is rested for the first three T20s while, Tim Southee is dropped from the shorter format. Tom Bruce will play as a top order batsman and has been a big hitter in the domestic circuit. Ben Wheeler is an acclaimed all-rounder. The players are named in the 14-player squad. Anderson is back from a major injury. Although an all-rounder, he will player as a batsman in the short format.
Bruce is induced into the team to boost up the batting line up. Gavin Larsen, a New Zealand selector said that the player has been a leading player in the domestic T20 competition since last two years. His average strike rate of 174 is among the best in the country. With an average score of 76, Bruce is a strong player in the team. Per Larsen, he has "proven himself as a very dangerous player." The selector said that it would be exciting to have Bruce alongside players like Martin Guptill, Corey Anderson and Munro Colins.
Wheeler is a left-arm-pace-bowler as well as a batsman. The Central District player has played six ODIs but has not played any international T20. Playing five matches, he had six wickets so far in the Super Smash games, New Zealand's domestic season. Larsen said that he had put up a lot of hard work to get into this point. Larsen claimed that he can swing the ball at a decent clip and can trouble any batsman. The selector cited the importance of introducing domestic players into the international circuit. He also pointed out players like Mark Chapman, Neil Wagner, George Worker, and Seth Rance were all seriously considered.
The last tournament that Corey Anderson played was in World T20. He was injured on the back and was rested in the Zimbabwe and South Africa tour. Since the drop, he has been playing as a batsman. In October, for the ODI series against India, he was on the top batting lineup. However, he could not deliver a good strike. Another player, who has come back to the team is Ross Taylor. The T20 campaign will commence from January 3, 2017 in Napier.
