Today’s IPL match is a lifeline for Mumbai Indians in the tournament. The team facing Kings XI Punjab is on the threshold of elimination, if they lose. A win will make them closer to the playoff securing fourth position on the IPL points table. Mumbai Indians also has an impressive run rate of 0.405, which is the highest so far in the season, however, their woeful record of losing back to back matches in the half of the league phase turned their fate to a complete haywire. Now, they are in a perilous situation and in no condition to face a threat.
On the other side, Kings XI Punjab will grab 14 points in total if they win the match against Mumbai. While, a defeat will make their further campaign more difficult. Interestingly, the team has the worst net run rate of the season far, -0.518. Mumbai has enough reasons to consider Punjab openers Lokesh Rahul and Chris Gayle the prime threats in the upcoming match. However, a wobbly middle order of Kings Punjab could emerge as a trouble. If Mumbai bowlers can tackle the openers, the match could completely come out of Punjab’s grab.
In their previous tussle, Kings XI scored 176 on the batting friendly ground of Indore. The Wankhede stadium is smaller and hence is better for players like Gayle. Also, in the previous match against Mumbai, both Gayle and Surya Kumar Yadav scored half-centuries.
In the current tournament, Mumbai seem to be completely dependent on Rohit Sharma’s strike. In the matches he lost his strike without good runs, his team could not made out a win. Mumbai won only in the matches where Rohit Sharma hammered with a good strike rate. This makes his wicket precious for Kings XI and also the most coveted one. Also, Axar Patel is a top striker of the team and a prime target for Punjab.
Mumbai has lost the first matches they played in the season. While, Kings has managed to win most of the matches they played in the first half of the league. This makes the upcoming match between the teams more enthralling.
