Both the team in the finale Ranji Trophy arena have rich legacies in first-class history of India. Mumbai is an unyielding giant that had 41 victories of the 45 final matches. While, Gujarat nicked the cup before even Team India could have a test title. The last time when Mumbai lost a final was back in 1990-91. It was the last defeat when the team lost to Haryana by 2 runs. The latest victory, last season, was against Saurashtra, which was the ninth consecutive title win for the team. The title winning Gujarat squad in 1950-51, headed by Polly Umrigar, played against iconic cricketers like Chandu Sarvate, Jamshed Bhaya, Madhavsinh Jagdale and Syed Mushtaq Ali.
In the currently ongoing final, Gujarat is with several strong players with excellent records. The batting line up is the strongest in the tournament with players like Priyank Panchal. The batsman emerged as the highest run getter of the season scoring a formidable 1270 runs in the tournament so far. In fact, the player is on the brink of breaking VVS Laxman's record to be the highest scorer in a single season in the tournament's history. He need only 146 runs to reach the decade old feat. The other opener, Samit Gohel, trails Panchal closely with a knock of 889 runs. While, Parthiv Patel is well known for his devastating stances against bowlers.
A little glitch in the team is the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. He is picked up in the International team to play ODI and T20s against England shortly. RP Sharma, who put on a strong attack in the semi-final match, is the next bowling hope for the team. Another bowler, Rush Kalaria, returned from the shoulder injury in the second inning of the semis. On the other hand, Mehul Patel and Chintan Gaja will form up a good attack to replace Bumrah.
Team Mumbai is equipped with both the top bowlers as well as batsman of the season. Starting from Abhishek Nayar to Shreyas Iyer, each one has delivered their unique stances to make the team formidable. Nayar has been with the team since five consecutive victories and in the semi-final, he made 58 in the decisive stretch to win the match. In the quarter final, his nine-wicket haul against Hyderabad was substantial. Shreyas Iyer is the top scorer of the team and is expected to show his capabilities. Young batsman Prithvi Shaw, Akhil Herwadker and Praful Yadav will form up a strong combination in the batting line up. In bowling, Shardul Thakur and Balwinder Sandhu will be strong with Nayar.
Gujarat and Mumbai has played 61 matches and the latter lost just two of them. The last instance when Gujarat won against Mumbai was in 1977-78. The current match will get spicy with both the teams confronting again.
