South Africa top bowler Morne Morkel finally took a clear stance on his cricketing future. Lately, on February 26, the bowler disclosed that he will retire from all forms of international cricket after the upcoming Test series against Australia. In August 2017, the 33 years old player took the Kolpak route as an indication of his retirement from international cricket. He wanted clarity on his induction at World Cup 2019. In response, South Africa head coach Ottis Gibson disclosed he was a part of the latter’s plan for the tournament. However, lately, Morkel’s decision to leave cricket proved the relevance of his other priorities.
Per the bowler, he need to put his family first and his conditions are “demanding” retirement from international cricket. He said, although a tough decision, he is set to start a “new chapter” in his life. Morkel has a young family, his wife settled abroad due to work and a two years old son. His wife’s work commitment is a reason for his decision, as disclosed by the player. He said, international schedules have put a “lot of strain” on his family as well as himself.
Morkel and being separated from his wife for 10 weeks and he described it as a “very tricky” situation. The player decided to end his international career after discussing with his wife. The cricketer, however, wants to keep on playing high level games and he might be busy with T20 tournaments around the globe. He was left unsold in recent IPL auction, opening prospects towards English County Cricket. On the upcoming series he said, he still feels mentally and physically great. South Africa has never won a Test series against Australia at home and this makes the upcoming series important for Morkel as well. He confirmed, his is 100% focused on winning the series against Australia.
Morkel has an excellent record as a bowler claiming 188 wickets playing 117 ODIs. He played 83 Test matches so far taking 294 wickets in the format. He is positive and confident in the upcoming culture of growth in the South Africa team. He said, he “leave with a happy heart”.
