Sri Lanka team bowling coach announced all-rounder Angelo Mathews will not bowl in the upcoming Test series against India. Mathews has been a top bowler as well as batsman in the team. However, as the player is injury stricken, Sri Lanka management decided not to play him as a bowler in the long format. Mathews was rested from the recently concluded tour against Pakistan. He injured his calf and was undergoing treatment.
Rumesh Ratnayake, bowling coach of Sri Lanka said Mathews did not bowl in a Test for a while and he does not think he will bowl in the upcoming Test too. The player will be considered for bowling only in ODI, the coach revealed. In the practice match against BCCI President’s XI, Mathews bowled only five overs.
Angelo Mathews has been suffering from a series of injuries since a year. This kept the player away from some series, while restricting in play in some other. Especially, he was kept away from bowling in Test format, even if he bowled some overs in several ODIs. With Mathew’s position compromised as a bowler, Sri Lanka must come out with more options in the department to tackle India. The top picks for the position could be among Roshan Silva, Dasun Shanaka and Dhananjaya de Silva.
Per the bowling coach, Sri Lanka team has done enough preparation for the India tour. He said the team did all they could do to “prepare for this challenge.” Apparently, the Sri Lanka team bowlers will land on the ground with strong plans against India batsmen.
Coach Ratnayake is focusing on reverse swing options. The pacers will be delivering reverse swing spells using SG balls. Per the coach, this type of bowling is of much significance on Indian pitches. He termed it as a “big-factor”. He also assured Sri Lanka bowlers are now accustomed to SG Balls, even if they play Duke balls.
