Following official procedures, BCCI has rolled out the interview call for applicants for the post of Head Coach of team India. Anil Kumble was appointed a year ago through the selection process and was on contract for a year. Kumble has coached India throughout one of the best stretches undefeated Test stretches. The current coach will have a direct entry to the selection process. It means, Kumble don’t need to apply for the post but will have to undergo a “fair and completely transparent” selection process. The last date of application for the post is set as May 31.
The selection process will be executed by the Cricket Advisory Committee. The panel comprises of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. It is the same committee that selected Anil Kumble last year. The interview process, this year, would be overseen by Committee of Administrators along with the Advisory Committee. Kumble was appointed by the former BCCI administration led by Anurag Thakur. His appointment was based on recommendation of the CAC. He was picked up from a list of several shortlisted candidates.
Per Virat Kohli, captain of Team India, the process is general and it has been followed since years and there is nothing wrong in it. He said, this is something the Board recognized and they are following the same pattern. Per the player this has been happening every year. While appointing Kumble as the coach, then secretary Ajay Shirke said the transition of the player to a coach should be smooth. He termed it as a professional appointment.
Kumble took over the helm of India team and led it to a strong test stretch of consecutive wins. Team India became the top Test team on ICC Chart for the longest stretch of time being undefeated since more than a year. As soon as Kumble became the coach he incurred some radical changes within the team as well as in the selection of players. Kumble introduced the rule to play first-class matches before entering the international arena again to prove fitness of players. Such systems paid off well, which is apparent clearly on the current strength and stance of the team.
