It was a big battle between the giants of the IPL 2018 season. Kolkata Knight Riders, thumped an impressive victory against the top team in IPL point chart in an hefty appeasement to their home crowd at Eden Gardens. With the 6 wicket victory, they replaced Chennai Super Kings on top of the charts.
Knight Riders, as usual, played their bowlers in a brilliant way. The pitch perfected the spin spells of the trio: Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav, letting them strangulate CSK’s inning. The Super Kings were limited to 177, failing to challenge Knight Riders properly.
On the other hand, apart from bowlers, Riders’ batsmen found brilliant strikes in the chase. The chase conditions were favourable, but it was the discovery of Shubham Gill that pull up the easy win sparring 14 balls. The batsmen knocked his maiden half-ton of the season, an unbeaten 57 off 36. Together with Dinesh Karthik beating his own unbeaten 45 off 18, the target seems more than just doable for Riders. It was a good entertainment for their fans in Kolkata.
Earlier in the inning, Super Kings batted hard to get through the 200 mark. They knew, it was only a high target that could save the match at Eden. The batsmen put up high strike rates, but this approach itself turned to their lacunae, beginning to lose wickets in short intervals. Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson hammered with grand strike rates, but they fell without good addition. All they could add was 63 runs playing 40 balls together.
The target was due to the handy knock of MS Dhoni, who added another accolade to his form as a finisher. In the 25 balls he played, the batsman plundered 4 sixes to inject the finishing momentum. In the last five overs CSK scored 56 runs. The captain added 45 runs alone in the inning.
The result might have been different, if Super Kings had played a bit tougher in the chase. There were several catch misses, which later came out with massive price to pay. Narine was dropped twice, while, the bowlers could not handle the aggression of Gill and Karthik. The result was sharp, they lost the match and surrendered the top of chart to Knight Riders.
