IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders announced Dinesh Karthik as the captain. He was auctioned at INR 7.4 Crore to the team for the season. Karthik will replace Gautam Gambhir, the former captain of the team. He will be assisted by Robin Uthappa as the vice-captain of the team. The former has good experience as captain leading Tamil Nadu to win Vijay Hazara Cup in 2019-10. As the captain of India Red team, he won Duleep trophy in 2017. The 32-years old player said he is honored to represent Kolkata Knight Riders. The player is ready ‘looking forward to this new challenge’. The batsman expressed his excitement saying it a “great combination of experience and youth”.
KKR has been picking up Uthappa since 2014 season. He was a potential candidate for the leadership role since before. Per assistant coach Simon Katich, being appointed as the captain he has the best years of his career in front of him. Katich marked that the player has been associated with IPL in the last 10 years and has an outstanding winning rate as a T20 captain. The coach observed he has 72% winning rate in the format as a captain. Per Katich, Uttappa knowns the conditions “extremely well” and also the overseas player “inside-out”.
Coach of Tamil Nadu team Hrishikesh Kanitkar lauded Karthik’s approach to the game. He said, the all-rounder is fearless having high energy levels. Per the coach the player has a critical level of “enthusiasm and chirpiness.” In 2017 season, Dinesh Karthik scored 361 runs for Gujarat Lions at an average of 36.1. Earlier, he also played with Mumbai Indians as a allrounder. In a season, he scored 510 runs while taking down 14 wickets. Karthik has a strong IPL record of playing 152 matches. His total tally is 2903 runs with a strike rate of 125.94. His wicket tally is 114 in IPL.
