In the women T20 exhibition match ahead of the first IPL qualifier, the Supernovas, led by Harmanpreet Kaur ran over Trailblazers, headed by Smriti Mandhana. The Supernovas won the Women’s T20 Challenge match by three wickets chasing a target of 130. It was an offbeat Women T20 as a preparation for upcoming Women IPL in the lines of Women BBL and NetWest Blast of England. There were several overseas women cricketers in the match.
Winning the toss, Supernovas sent in Trailblazers to bat first in the match. The opening wickets, Allyssa Healy and Smriti Mandhana could not put up a good partnership reaching ends of their strike by the third over. Megan Schutt and Elyse Perry nicked the wickets of the players respectively. In the powerplay overs another wicket, that of Beth Mooney was also done away. The score built up by the middle order with Suzie Bates and Deepti Sharma partnering after the powerplay.
Sharma played until the ninth over, hauling the score to 58. She scored 21 runs off 22 balls. Jemimah Rodrigues played the next partnership stretch with Bates adding 25 off 23 balls. Bates played until the pre-ultimate over pulling up the score to 123. Shikha Pandey was unbeaten playing the final overs for 14 runs.
In the chase, the Supernovas were headstrong. Playing the powerplay overs, openers Mithali Raj and Danielle Wyatt scored 47 runs in 5.5 overs. Ekta Bisht sent Raj back to pavilion breaking into the inning. The India captain scored 22 off 17 balls, striking 3 fours and a six. In the following over, Poonam Yadav dismissed Wyatt at 24 runs. Yadav struck again in the ninth over to take down Meg Lanning. With her wicket, the chase was at 71 for 3 in 9 overs. The middle order was strengthened by Sophie Devine and Elyse Perry playing until the 15th over together.
Perry remained unbeaten in the inning adding 13 runs, while the rest of the lower order weathered away without further partnerships. Finally, Perry and Pooja Vastrakar walked the winning mile for Supernovas. Bates was awarded Player of the Match for her winning score.
