After Alastair Cook stepped down as the test captain of England, Joe Root is being named as his successor. Cook was at the helm of the team for last four years. The making of Root for the role, in fact, began in 2015, when he was made the vice-captain of the test side. 26-years old Root was offered the job over the weekend by ex-cricketer, Andrew Strauss, the director of Cricket England. The player is offered the designation but the next test assignment for England is only after about five months. His first test match as the captain will be against South Africa in July. England is scheduled for a test series at home awaiting South Africa’s visit.
Since 2012, when Root debuted as an England batsman, he has been a top player in the team. The player debuted under Cook in his first match. The new vice-captain in the team to take Root’s position is Ben Stokes, the all-rounder player. Stokes is confirmed as the new vice-captain and is awaiting appointment. He will be designated by this week before the ODI campaign with West Indies starts.
Per Strauss, Root as several “admirable qualities in Test career so far.” He praised the player on his journey through the years to became a premier batsman of the team across all formats. Strauss said, Root demonstrated his drive determination, cricketing intelligence, and the ability to learn in a very “short period of time.” Per the director, Root is the right man and his experience will serve him well in his new role.
About Ben Stokes, Strauss is delighted as he thinks he is “the real presence and influence within the team.” He is doubtless about the new responsibility of the player. He added that the new role will help the player to continue his rapid rise as a world class allrounder.
The new captain of the team, Joe Root said “it is a huge honor” for him and he is feeling “privileged, humble and very excited.” Root further added that team England is with “a very good group of players” and he is looking forward to lead. The young player also accoladed the former captain’s achievements saying he made the most of the team’s talent.
