The Sri Lanka team is struck with injury woes with its top players returning from the squad. After the second T20 campaign against South Africa, three players, including the captain, will depart from the tour back to their country. Angelo Mathews, Nuwan Pradeep and Danushka Gunathilaka are relieved from the team as the players are injured. It was Pradeep and Gunathilaka who were dropped from the team due to injury. Mathews is relived to personal reasons, apart from injury. The press release rolled out by Sri Lanka Cricket expressed that Mathew's return from the tour was arranged beforehand and it was preplanned as the player had a personal reason.
Apart from the release based on "personal grounds," Mathews also suffered a hamstring injury in the match on Sunday. The player knocked 54 and remained unbeaten in the T20. Sri Lanka won the match and he was among the key players to notch the victory. As the batsman, will fly back home, he will not be available for the five ODIs of the South Africa tour. Mathews, the skipper, is a strong player of the team and his absence might take a troll of their stance in the limited format of the game. In his absence, Dinesh Chandimal will play as the captain of the team.
The other players, Gunathilaka and Pradeep were injured in the first T20 of the series. Pradeep has injured his hand and Gunathilaka is troubled by serious back pain. The three players were all crucial for Sri Lanka and they were in the primary squad. Mathews is among the most critical players of the team as he can amply play the role of a strong all-rounder. Sri Lanka has won the second T20 match on Sunday. It was the first victory for Sri Lanka in the tour. The third will be played on January 25.
Apart from the ODI series with South Africa, Sri Lanka also has woes over the coming tour to Australia for a T20 series. The new ODI squad will be named shortly replacing the three players.
