Injury woes are still haunting Sri Lanka team. It had a troublesome season last year with fitness of players turning out as the major issue. The team could not play its full strength in several series. Injury was also the major reason that induced an instability in leadership position of the team. In the series in Bangladesh, the team played strong, but another injury struck the team lately. Ahead of the T20 tri-series at home following the tour, top batsman Asela Gunaratne injured his right arm. Gunaratne could not keep up his game in the Bangladesh series, picking only 35 runs in the ODI series. He was also injured before due to a fracture.
Per a recent release from Sri Lanka Cricket, the top player had a serious arm injury in the Bangladesh tour. Medically, it injury is termed as “grade II rotator cuff strain contusion”. Gunaratne was injured while practicing fielding in Bangladesh. The Nidahas Trophy will involve India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and the latter two trying to put up their bet players in the tournament. With Gunaratne’s absence, Sri Lanka selectors will have to worry more. The tri-series T20I will set off on March 6.
Sri Lanka has been playing without with players like Kusal Perera and Angelo Mathews. The latter was reinstated as the team’s captain, just ahead of the tournament. The batsmen did not play most of the matches of the series due to hamstring injury. Mathews might miss the Nidahas Trophy as well as he is yet to recover fully. Perera was not picked for the tour due to a side-strain issue. Another player Shehan Madushanka was rested due to hamstring injury.
The selection process for the upcoming T20 tri-series will start with the domestic tournament, which will set off by the coming weekend. Per Asanka Gurusinha, all players are asked to participate in the tournament for their assessment. They will be picked for the following trophy as per their forms in the immediate one.
