England won the first match of Champions Trophy tournament against Bangladesh. However, it had a price to pay. Top All-rounder, middle order batsman Chris Woakes strained himself in the match. As reported, the injury was not minor and England is forced to rest him for the entire tournament. Woakes could deliver only two overs after which, he was off the field. He suffered a side strain.
Captain Morgan said the player was injury-struck since before. The skipper said Woakes “was chomping a bit to play.” Even in the series against South Africa, the management wanted to rest the player. But he got the opening match. He bowled strong opening the match with a maiden. Morgan was worried about Woakes, when he could return to bowl. The skipper said he has been very impressive over the last couple of years. He called him “a mainstay and a very reliable guy.” Morgan added, if the bowler could not play, it would be a loss for England.
Woakes suspension is certain, as typical side strains heal in four to six weeks. The player will be at complete rest in the time, failing which, it might turn up as a more complex issue. The bowler injured his intercostal muscles and it takes time to heal. This injury is typical to fast bowlers. If they bowl without recovering completely, the muscles deteriorate. Woakes might lose his aggression as well as his pace and will have to focus on techniques rather than speed. This however, is always a better option for bowlers.
Team England will get busy to name a solid replacement for the all-rounder. As Woakes retired, there are possibilities for Steven Finn to replace the player and find a place in the team. Finn was considered just unlucky to miss the top XI. The Middlesex player is current in form. He claimed three wickets against South Africa A recently.
