The selector panel of India are meeting on January 6 to decide the squad for the upcoming ODI and T20 matches. The panel, under Chairman MSK Prasad, will be focusing to form the best possible combination of players based on their form for the specific format. The team formation will be a crucial factor as the matches will be also a warm up for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2017. The tournament will be played in England in June. This will be the second instance for India facing England in the year after the fourth coming ODI and T20 series. The team selection is most likely to be a challenge as MS Dhoni has given up his captaincy and batsman like Dhawan waiting to give their bests.
There are strong supports for Virat Kohli to take on the captainship baton from Dhoni as he is already leading the Test side. With his captainship, it would be a different formation in the team as he is a leading batsman in the format. Thus, the selectors check the balance of the shift of leadership so that it does have a minimum impact on the team's performance. Meanwhile, as the Test side is doing good, players like MS Dhoni are not in the team. This led inclusion of newer players like Chetestwar Pujara and young players like Lokesh Rahul to represent the test side.
However, T20 and ODI teams comprise of the former squad without any new inductions like that of the test team. MS Dhoni is a top player and the wicket keeper, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Shekhar Dhawan all has good track-record in the format. Apart from the batting line up, selection of the bowling squad is also going to be a challenge as R Ashwin is most probably to rest for the series. While Ravindra Jadeja will need several strong bowlers along with him to maintain the ODIs. In this context, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya are strong considerations.
Cheteshwar Pujara is on a top list for selection while it is certain that Gautam Gambhir will not make it out. Meanwhile Rohit Sharma will be absent due to a surgery along with Rahane, who is also injured. This makes up a good chance or rather a life line for Dhawan to make up his position. It would be a comeback for the player, if selected, as he played is last ODI a year back in January 2016. There is also a strong chance for Lokesh Rahul. Suresh Raina, on the other hand, might be picked up for the middle order as he is considered as a bowling option too.
