India is getting ready for England to play the Test series with a new ensemble. The 18-member squad is rolled out recently with several changes in the old team. A substantial name in new list is Rishabh Pant. He will debut the format in the first match of the series. Pant played an impressive IPL season in the latest tournament, followed by a strong performance with the India A team. An advantage with the player is his latest experience on England pitch in the Class A tournament.
Pant will play as the wicket keeper and a batsman in the series. Another new name in the squad is Kuldeep Yadav. It is his second Test campaign after his maiden Test against Afghanistan. Yadav has been elemental in India’s bowling attack with his wrist-spin deliveries.
Mohammed Shami cleared the yo-yo test to get back into the team. Along with him, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were also included in the squad. Jasprit Bumrah will be joining the team from the second Test, if he is fit for selection. The bowler injured his thumb in the Ireland tour.
Among the excluded players are Rohit Sharma, making the way for young entrants into the team. On the other hand, Bhuvneshwar Kumar could not make it out the selection due to his aggravated back. A surprise is Yuzvendra Chahal, who is dropped from the squad. Rishabh Pant’s selection, in fact, is due to the absence of Wriddhiman Saha, who is injured and not likely to recover soon. Although Dinesh Karthik is still the primary keeper, Pant can act as a backup apart from batting.
Pant’s recent strikes made a stronger case for his inclusion. In the match against West Indies A in Taunton, the player scored an unbeaten 67 to pullup India’s victory. Also, in the latest match against England Lions, he knocked an unbeaten 37.
