India team selectors decided to put two uncapped players in the T20 series following the ODI against New Zealand. Batsmen Shreyas Iyer and bowler Mohammed Siraj would be the T20 debutants in the series. Iyer is a Mumbai batsman with "prolific record" across several formats, while Siraj is the top bowler in the domestic circuit. Per MSK Prasad, team selector Chairman, Iyer and Siraj has been a consistent performer across the formats such as first-class, one-day maths and T20. Prasad also added that the players are being included to offer "a long run." Senior bowler, Ashish Nehra is picked for the first match of the series. It is supposed to be the last international fixture of the bowler who announced retirement before a couple of weeks.
Shreyas Iyer has been the key player in the India A team. He was the leading scorer in the recent series victory against New Zealand A. Also, against South Africa A, he knocked strong scores to put his team ahead in a recent tri-series. In the tri-series, that included Afghanistan A as well, Iyer amassed 213 runs. Mohammed Siraj is the third highest wicket taker in 2016-17 Ranji Season. He also played alongside Hyderabad Sunrisers in IPL 2017, where the fast bowler took 10 wickets.
The selectors also rolled out the squad for first two test matches against Sri Lanka. The three match series will commence after the New Zealand series. Axar Patel and Abhinav Mukund are axed, while M Vijay is included in the team. Chairman Prasad said about Nehra that the player did not ask for a farewell match. He said, his selection for the second match of the T20 series will depend on the management as well as the selectors. So far, it is being understood that the first match of the T20 series will be the ending international show for the senior fast bowler.
