Hyderabad Sunrisers claim first IPL fixture with Yuvraj’s strike
A ferocious Yuvraj. A strike over the deep mid-wicket.

IPL started with a color of its previous season. Hyderabad Sunrisers defended their score of 207 against Royal Challengers Bangalore to nick the first fixture by 35 runs. The prime architect of the 200 plus score was Yuvraj Singh, who smashed 62 runs off 27 balls in a flashy stride. Moises Henriques’ addition, 52 off 37, was as important as that of Yuvraj. The duo scaled up the score to be the second highest IPL figures for the team. It was enough to thump RCB, who have chased down a 200 plus score only once in IPL.

David Warner could not pose a strong strike although he started the inning with a blast of two fours and a six. Shikhar Dhawan continued with Henriques to add 40 playing a decent and careful stretch. After Dhawan, when Yuvraj came to bat, there was no salvage and the momentum became abrupt. The batsman hit everything that came on his way. He was on crease until the pre-ultimate over hauling the score to 190. It was Ben Cutting who added 16 off 6 playing the last over to hit two sixes. Yuvraj was awarded Player of the Match.

In the Chase, the Challengers emerged headstrong racing to 43 in first four overs for no loss. Chris Gayle and Mandeep Singh hauled the score to pass the 50 mark in five overs. It looked all fine for the team until the slog began with both Singh and Gayle removed in consecutive overs. The chase was still on full swing with Kedhar Jadhav and Travis Head playing a similar partnership stretch like that of the openers. The duo hauled the score to 116 until removed in consecutive overs of 12th and 13th.

The absence of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers was felt in the moment as Shane Watson could not support the chase for long. RCB lost wickets in each over only leaving aside the 16th. In 18th over, Shane Watson was down along with Sreenath Aravind plummeting the team to 156 for 8. By the end, the team could drag the chase to 172. Ashish Nehra became the first left arm bowler to take 100 wickets in IPL in the inning.
