Group A Ranji balances team selection following last season results
Lokesh Rahul from team Karnataka is on focus in Group A Ranji along with the likes of Gambhir.

The Group divisions of Ranji Trophy 2017-18 has mixed up the teams from both the sides of the balance. While there are teams with intensive records on one side, the same group has teams with weak feats in the game. Group A comprises of teams from both the top and bottom echelons of the previous season's result chart. The teams in the group are Karnataka, Delhi, Assam, Railways, Hyderabad, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.

Karnataka has been the top team in domestic circuit of the country. There are several feats, which the team has reached since several seasons. Karnataka was the winner of Ranji Trophy, Irani Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy in a row in both in 2013-14 and 2014-15 tournaments. The team has won Ranji Trophy eight times so far starting with the 1973-74 season. Lokesh Rahul is among the top players of the team. Delhi's performance in the last season was intense. With players like Gautam Gambhir, Rishabh Pant and Manan Sharma, it reached fourth place in the result chart in 2016-17 season in Group B.

Assam reached the semifinals in the previous season. However, the team lost five matches to gain only eight points. Several players have left the team for international coaching. Still, it has Arup Das, Rishav Das and Krishna Das as the strongest bets. Railways has been on the bottom along with Assam finishing ninth in Group A the previous season. Even in 2015-16, the team could not do better. Maharashtra is a semi-finalist from 2014-15 season. The team has a strong group of players comprising of Ankit Bawne, Anupam Sanklecha and Rahul Tripathi. In the previous season, it finished as the fifth team in Group B.

Young player Ambati Rayadu, Mohammed Siraj and B Sandeep are in team Hyderabad. It was the first teams out of 10 in Group C last season, in Quarter-final. Also, S Badrinath, B Anirudh has been the top guns of the squad. Hyderabad had B Arun as their former coach. Uttar Pradesh has Suresh Raina, Kuldeep Yadav, and the likes of Shivam Chaudhary. It was seventh in Group A in 2016-17 season.
