Australia players are always figures of respect in India, even if with timely glitches, which are ought to be irrelevant with time. Just after the DRS review controversy shunned, Australia received a good news. Indian Premier League team, Kings XI Punjab announced Glenn Maxwell as the captain of the team. This makes three Australian captains in IPL, along with Steven Smith and David Warner. Smith has been leading Rising Pune Supergiants, while Warner heads Sunrisers Hyderabad, that won the title last season. Kings XI was led by Murali Vijay in the last season. The team also has players like Eoin Morgan, Darren Sammy and Hasim Amla, who has intensive experience a caption of their respective teams.
Against this backdrop, the selection of Glenn Maxwell, the 28 years old batsman without any experience, as a captain is caught as a surprise. The player is not a part of the international test squad that is on tour to India. There is a strong chance that the player would be included in the team as Mitchell Marsh is being dropped from the team due to shoulder injury.
Murali Vijay inherited his captaincy from David Miller, in the last season, when the latter lost five matches of the six they played. The team has not performed strong, which became the reason for changing its captain. Maxwell, on the other hand, has been through brilliant performance in the tournament. In 2014, he was accoladed as the IPL Player of the tournament. In the last season in 2016, the player sustained injuries and was rested. Glenn Maxwell is the top senior player in Australia team, who is aligned with the likes of Adam Gilchrist.
In fact, Kings XI has a strong history of Australian captainship. Players like George Bailey, David Hussey and Gilchrist are its former captains. Currently there are three players in the team. Along with Maxwell, Shaun Marsh, and Marcus Stoinis will be playing with Maxwell.
