England started its campaign at WACA, Perth, on its last change to save the current Ashes series. After losing the first two matches, if England let go this match as well, Australia will seal the five-match series win. The team came up with no changes, while Australia brought Mitchell Marsh into the squad. Winning the toss, England Skipper Joe Root decided to bat.
By lunch break, the team lost two wickets for 91 runs. It was the 150th Test of former captain Alastair Cook, but the player could not make a culpable mark in the match. He was the first wicket to fall in the fifth over, without doing much. The inning steered with the strike of Mark Stoneman. England’s opening session at WACA was not that disappointing even if it lost Cook and James Vince. Mitchell Starc removed Cook at 7. The player is though a dip in form with no scores in consecutive matches.
The second wicket partnership between Mark Stoneman and James Vince milked 63 runs. The stretch lasted for almost the session. Vince was brisk in playing spin attacks from Aussie bowlers. But the player could not tackle them for long edging at a delivery off Josh Hazlewood. At the other end, Stoneman took an aggressive stance to steer the inning. He smashed eight boundaries hitting Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc. He scored 48 by the break. Joe Root just arrive at the crease to bat after Vince before the session ended.
In the following session, England lost two more wickets. Stoneman was removed by Starc at 56, while Migueal Cummings removed Joe Root. Root scored 20 runs in the inning, returning shortly after lunch. In the next session, Dawid Malan scored 43 runs. By tea break, Australia scored 177 runs for 4 wickets. Jonny Bairstow was batting at 14.
