In the opening four-day match against Sri Lanka A, England Lions notched a strong victory by 195-run. The second inning from the Lions had a striking knock from the Currans. Both the players Tom Currans and Sam Currans strike down three wickets each to rattle the visitors. Tom ended with 3 for 35 and Sam finished with 3 wickets for 21. The players also set a good tone in batting adding 62 to haul their team to leads. From Sri Lanka’s side the only strike was from Udara Jayasundera, who scored 64 off 166 deliveries.
Lions captain Keaton Jennings was satisfied with his team’s stance in the match stating the performance of the whole team as “brilliant.” He acclaimed the bowling attacks and said it had a good variety. Sri Lanka resumed the next day on 41 losing two wickets. Tom Curran notched an early wicket in the final day taking down Roshen Silva in the first over. He also trapped Charith Asalanka with an extra bounce. Captain Dhananjaya de Silva and Dilruwan Perera were removed by Rayner. Sam Curran’s third wickets was Asitha Fernando, the number 11 batsman.
For Jennings, there are still some improvement that need to be done in the team. He was particular about the top order batting as an area of improvement. The irregularities in the batting lineup was quite apparent when in the first inning the last two wickets scored 106 and in the second inning, more emphasis was from the lower order instead of the top. The last four batsman scored 130 runs in the second inning. He said that there are tough periods when getting runs might be difficult, but per the captain, players should take care of their roles and responsibilities. He also hinted some changes in the bowling attack. He stated that there are still room for improvements. In overall, the captain accoladed a good team performance in the match.
